Why a Fredericton year makes website maintenance matter

Consider how often a Fredericton business changes what customers need to know. From 1 October to 31 May overnight street parking is banned, so a downtown restaurant or a salon with evening clients may want a parking note for most of the year. Winter also brings snow days. Then spring brings the freshet: in 2018 the Saint John River peaked at 8.12 m near the city against a flood stage of 6.5 m. Each September the Harvest Music Festival closes part of Queen Street for six days. Every one of those belongs on your website as well as your Google listing.

Customers notice when a site lags. Holiday hours still up in February, a summer menu in November or silence about a storm closure all hint that nobody is minding the shop. In contrast, a short, clear notice posted the same day signals the opposite, and people remember it.

Website maintenance also covers the software underneath. WordPress, its theme and each plugin come from different developers, so each changes on its own calendar. If you ignore them through a winter, cracks appear: a booking calendar that will not open on phones, a contact form confirming messages that never arrive, an abandoned plugin left as an open door. Routine care finds both kinds of drift, in the words and in the code, before customers do.

Website maintenance catches the small fault before the costly one

A problem caught by a routine check costs little. However, a problem caught by a customer costs a lost inquiry, and often a repair bill on top. That is the whole case for steady upkeep. For Fredericton sites we add a same-day notice routine: when snow, a flood watch, a festival road closure or a power cut changes your plans, send us a line and a clear message goes up as quickly as we can manage, then comes down once things are back to normal.

Quiet faults

What website maintenance catches on a site that seems fine

None of these shows on the home page, so they can sit unnoticed for a season or more.

  1. 01

A storm notice that outstayed the storm

Posted in a rush in January and still showing in April. Visitors decide you are closed or careless, so some go elsewhere without ever asking.

  2. 02

    Contact forms losing messages

Visitors get a polite thank-you, while the message itself ends up in spam or your mail server quietly refuses it. Routing mail through an authenticated sending service, and sending ourselves a test inquiry every month, ends the silence.

  3. 03

    French pages left behind

On a bilingual site, the English page gets updated and its French twin does not, or a renamed page breaks the language switch. English readers never notice, while French readers meet stale facts or an error.

  4. 04

Nobody knows who holds the domain

Whoever set it up has moved on, the hosting password is lost and renewal reminders go to an inbox no one opens. We trace each account, then bring it under your name.

  5. 05

Hidden pages from a forgotten plugin

An abandoned plugin can let a stranger add spam pages or links visible to search crawlers but not to you. Traffic slips, yet the cause stays out of sight.

Four layers, four schedules

The four layers of website maintenance

Each part moves on its own timetable and fails in its own way, so each gets a routine of its own.

01

WordPress core

Security patches go on promptly

Security releases go on soon after publication, following the update steps WordPress documents. Big version jumps wait until every plugin the site relies on supports them.

02

Theme and plugins

A backup before each update

The layer behind most broken pages and most intrusions. Extensions you have stopped using are removed completely, because a deactivated plugin can still be exploited.

03

Server and PHP version

Changed only with your say-so

Hosts retire old PHP releases. Sites on an aging version run slower, lose security fixes and eventually get pushed onto a newer release with no warning, which is when untested plugins break. For this reason, we plan that move with you first.

04

Domain, DNS and certificate

Renewal dates on file

Seldom touched, yet if one lapses your website and email can vanish together. We record who owns each, which account it sits in and when it renews.

The work

What our website maintenance covers

01

Updates with a safety net

WordPress, theme and plugins brought up to date on a regular cycle, always after a new backup, followed by a look at your main pages on an actual phone.

02

Backups stored elsewhere

Your database and files copied to storage separate from your host, with the occasional trial restore so a backup is proven, not assumed.

03

Security basics

Regular malware sweeps, a cap on failed sign-ins, accounts for departed staff closed, and fast patching whenever a weakness in one of your extensions goes public.

04

Uptime monitoring

A monitoring service pings your site around the clock, and a person, not just an inbox, hears about it when the site goes down.

05

Monthly form tests

Every contact and booking form tried with a dummy inquiry each month to confirm the message really reaches you.

06

Content changes on request

When something changes, such as new hours, a flood notice, a festival-week parking tip or a staff change, send it over and it goes live in English and in any French text you supply.

Done carefully

Website maintenance where the keys stay with you

Standards we follow for every client, set out so you can check us against them.

How we work
Hosting, domain and the master admin login remain in your name. Our access runs through a separate user that you are free to delete whenever you choose.

Website maintenance does not mean taking custody of your site. Normal upkeep comes inside every monthly plan; only a site that is years behind, or already infected, needs a separate clean-up, priced up front.

How we work

Four steps, start to finish

How a Fredericton business goes from hard to find to easy to choose.

  1. 01

    Look closely

We audit your site and Business Profile, then check where you appear from the north side, downtown and the nearby communities.

  2. 02

    Choose the searches

We pick the phrases worth chasing, from Google.ca suggestions and your own customers, and match each one to a single page.

  3. 03

    Do the work

Profile, page, content and listing fixes, ordered by the difference each one is likely to make.

  4. 04

    Report and refine

A brief monthly note covering calls, messages and rankings, plus what we will tackle next.

Questions

Website maintenance questions from Fredericton owners

What does upkeep cost?

Ordinary website maintenance is built into each monthly plan, $250 Starter, $350 Growth, $550 Pro, billed in Canadian dollars, month to month. However, sites neglected for years, or hacked, get a separate one-time clean-up price after we inspect them.

Can you post a closure notice during a storm or a flood watch?

We can. When you email us a sentence or two, a banner goes up as fast as we can arrange it, along with a nudge to adjust your Google hours. Once the doors open again, we take it down.

Our site has English and French versions. Do you look after both?

Yes, the French side gets the same updates, backups and broken-link checks as the English. When French wording changes, we paste in what your translator or staff provide, word for word.

A former employee built our site. Can you take it over?

Most likely. First comes a stocktake: the platform, the plugins, which email address controls the domain and hosting, and anything outdated or risky. Then you get a written plan and a fixed price for whatever needs catching up.

Google says our site may be unsafe. What happens next?

Treat it as a separate repair job. We locate and strip out the malicious code, shut the hole it came through, fall back on clean backups where they exist, and ask Google to re-check the site when it is clean.

Is hosting included?

No, and that is deliberate. You pay the host directly and the account carries your name, so you never depend on us to reach your own site. Still, we can recommend a reliable provider and do the technical setup with you.
